Donating archival material

We welcome donations of archival material from individuals and organisations.

What do we accept?

We accept and preserve both analogue and digital original material related to the Swedish-speaking population in Finland, both local and national. Examples of archival material include letters, journals, manuscripts, notes, photographs, audio and film recordings. We make the material available to researchers and the public.

We accept:

  • archival material related to life, language, traditions, folk music and folk dance
  • family and personal archives
  • archives of mansions
  • archives of cultural operators and organisations
  • archives of scientific associations, societies and communities in human and social sciences

We do not hold government archives. We also do not accept material related to collections already held by other archival institutions or copies and transcripts of documents held in other archives.

What does a donation entail?

We always enter into a donation agreement with the donor for the material we receive. A donation means that the ownership of the material is transferred to SLS. The donor of archival material is always welcome to access the material on site in our research room.

What happens to the material?

We will organise your donation and register it in our archive database, where it will be searchable by our users. Information about the material will also be searchable in the national search portal Finna. The material becomes available in our reading rooms in Helsinki or Vaasa.

Some digitised and digital documents, photographs, recordings, etc. can also be accessed via Finna. When publishing material online, both legal and ethical aspects are always taken into account.

How can you prepare a donation?

Before handing over the material, we can agree on how you can roughly inventory it. We are grateful for any information you can provide about what you are donating.

Your history is worth preserving!
